Hafnir
Hafnir is the Gondiar domain held by Finn Jalgori-Tobu as Minsterialis and the land offered to settlers from the late arkship Diligent. The Hafnir deal is the novel’s first major political bargain between Uranic client aristocracy and baseline newcomers — a settlement that looks like economic mutual interest until Dominion crackdowns and liberation politics consume Gondiar.
Finn’s domain and the land deal
As Minsterialis of Hafnir, Finn holds status and land inside the Jalgori-Tobu client structure even while he longs to leave provincial administration for deep space. After the Anoosha rescue, he and Josias Aponi negotiate: Diligent humans receive settlement rights at Hafnir; Finn gains allies, off-world path, and a stake in a ship that can still matter after colonists leave the hull.
On Gondiar the Marchioness and family accept the deal as stabilizing for the local human economy — absorbing productive settlers under existing ministerial titles rather than leaving a homeless arkship population as a security problem. Colonists depart the Diligent for Hafnir as Gath refits and crew changes re-profile the ship for Finn and Ellie’s missions.
Settlement, politics, and later crisis
Hafnir is more than real estate: it is the legal and social bridge between two human strata — privileged Uranics and baseline Diligent arrivals. Over years Josias’s Regal Democrat politics and Human Affairs Council role grow from that foothold; family ties thicken when he marries Finn’s twin Otylia. Liberation sentiment and offworld funding (tracked partly by Terence’s Santa Rosa network) use Hafnir’s settler base as part of a wider Gondiar human story.
When navy lockdowns and Josias’s strike broadcast shatter client-rule compromise, Hafnir’s original bargain is overtaken by flight, warrants, and airstrikes against the Jalgori-Tobus. The domain remains symbolic: proof that even a carefully cut land deal cannot protect humans when Celestial hardliners choose repression as policy.
