Arkship Diligent
The arkship Diligent is a late-arriving human generation ship and the novel’s principal mobile setting. Owned and politically voiced by Josias Aponi, crewed by figures including granddaughter Ellie and captain Dejean, it bonds with Finn Jalgori-Tobu after the Anoosha rescue and becomes the platform for ZPZ acquisition, Engine ops, and the final flight from Dolod.
Late arkship and crew
In the far-future Centauri Cluster, the Diligent represents a human wave that still expects settlement space millennia after Celestials already rule. Baseline crew culture — shipboard hierarchy, colony planning, Earth-exodus memory — contrasts with Uranic client aristocracy and Celestial court life. Josias is more than a shipowner: his oratory frames Diligent identity as political, not only logistical.
Ellie serves as field lieutenant and Finn’s closest operational partner; Dejean runs ship command while politics and salvage pull the hull into Traveler and Dominion crossfire. Engineers and mission specialists support refits after colonists leave for land.
Hafnir settlement, recovery, and refits
The Anoosha crash of a Diligent spaceplane is the ship’s introduction to the plot: Ellie and Josias find Finn; the Hafnir land deal settles many colonists on Gondiar. Finn and Ellie later work to recover the arkship itself and pursue a ZPZ generator so it can operate as a true deep-space vessel rather than a near-spent colony carrier.
Refits by the Gath — the Changeling labourers Otylia is working to get off Gondiar altogether — and the crew changes that come with them re-profile the Diligent for long campaigns: salvage at Terrik Papuan under fire from Traveler assets linked to Andino, the Kajval extraction with Elsbeth McQuillan, and the Kingsnest run for Archimedes Engine software. Relativistic ship-time versus decades of world-time on Gondiar makes the hull a time machine as well as a home.
ZPZ, Dolod, and final manoeuvres
With ZPZ capability and Engine access the Diligent becomes the instrument of the Dolod endgame, and then its beneficiary: a transfer coupled through an anchor ship and the ship’s own ZPZ field is what carries it out of the capital system under Helena-Thyra’s kill orders. Aboard and around the ship, Ellie’s rekaul recovery of Gyvoy’s mind-wipe exposes that the Engine plot has been steered by Celestial-level infiltration. The Diligent ends the novel not as a successful colony transport docked at peace, but as a fugitive ark still carrying human resistance — and the knowledge that Cluster politics can reach inside a crew’s own neural gear.
