Centauri Cluster
The Centauri Cluster is the dense star field that forms the main stage of Exodus: The Archimedes Engine. Tens of thousands of years after humanity fled a dying Sol system, evolved transhumans known as Celestials rule sprawling dominions here while later-arriving humans — including Uranics and baseline arkship crews — live under their order or at its margins.
Settlement after the Sol exodus
The Cluster is the long-term destination of successive human waves. Early settlers and their descendants became the Celestials: long-lived, neurally advanced, and politically dominant. Later arkships — among them the late-arriving Diligent — still reach Cluster space carrying populations who expected free worlds and instead find layered hierarchies of queens, archons, client rulers, and Travelers.
Geography is multi-system rather than single-world: agricultural client planets, capital systems rich in helium economies, and engineered or migrating bodies such as the iron exotic gas giant Dolod. Ancient megastructures — notably Archimedes Engines — show that orbital and planetary engineering is part of the Cluster’s deep history, not only a novel-era plot device.
Celestial dominions and human underclasses
The novel focuses on the Crown Dominion, an Imperial Accord among royal houses whose queens rotate the empress role. Other dominions and threats (Uthara, Capo Frois, Mara Yama activity) sit beyond or against that alliance. Within Dominion space, Uranic families such as the Jalgori-Tobus administer human society on worlds like Gondiar as client proxies, while baseline newcomers bargain for land at places such as Hafnir.
Technology and status are tightly coupled: Celestial materials like livestone, neural mindline continuity among queens, and high-end drives such as ZPZ generators mark who can act at interstellar scale. The Cluster is therefore both a physical setting and a political map — denser than classic space-opera emptiness, and always under someone’s claim.
Role in the novel
Every major thread is Cluster-local: Finn’s fall over Anoosha, Terence’s investigations in Santa Rosa, Helena and Thyra’s court on Wynid, and the endgame around Kelowan and Dolod. The Cluster is not a backdrop destination the characters leave; it is the closed arena in which rebellion, usurpation, and Engine-scale physics collide.
