Kelowan
Kelowan is the capital-system focus of the Crown Dominion in Exodus: The Archimedes Engine. Imperial politics, helium-sea economic power, and the long approach of the engineered gas giant Dolod all converge here — making Kelowan both prize and hostage in the novel’s endgame chaos.
Imperial capital and HeSea stakes
Kelowan is the Dominion’s political and logistical centre: home to imperial institutions, queen-fleet rendezvous, and the administration of the Crown Dominion’s HeSea helium-3 wealth, which is harvested far off in the Pillar of Zeus / Tinaja theatre and spent here. Control of Kelowan’s orbitals and industrial base underwrites naval power across the Crown Dominion systems.
Queens rotate the empress role under the Imperial Accord; during the novel’s crisis Empress Carolien-Amaia is a central figure whose palace and position come under multi-vector attack. Hardline Queen Helena-Thyra of Wynid brings her fleet early to Kelowan under cover of eagerness for imperial exercises — positioning Wynid power at the capital years ahead of a supposed Mara Yama confrontation.
The capital world
The capital itself is the most heavily protected planet in the Dominion: fifteen orbital towers linked by a georing, navy docks, and the Imperial Palace terraced in livestone on the levelled summit of Mount Vaxjo, grown from the royal seat Zuberi-Dulcina held before the Accord. Kinnox is the in-system orbit where late arrivals park; it is where the Diligent sits when the novel opens.
Dolod trajectory and political risk
For decades Dominion planners track Dolod, an iron exotic gas giant steered by an ancient Archimedes Engine. If Dolod settles usefully into the Kelowan system, iron-exotic wealth and strategic depth expand for whoever holds the licences; if its trajectory is denied or twisted, the capital’s future economy and security shrink. That binary is why human liberation planners and Celestial operators alike treat the Engine as a civilizational lever, not a curiosity.
Gyvoy Enfoe’s influence on Finn Jalgori-Tobu frames Engine use as a blow against Kelowan-friendly outcomes. In the climax, Engine commands and anchor-ship geometry redirect momentum toward Boksrock rather than a simple Kelowan-denial plan — and Boksrock’s path toward the capital becomes an existential threat layered on top of palace sabotage, including kestrel-sprite attacks.
Endgame chaos
By the novel’s close Kelowan is in simultaneous crisis: imperial succession and legitimacy collapse around Carolien’s fall; Helena-Thyra celebrates hardline gains amid the wreckage; fleets that were massed for show must respond to Engine-scale physics; and the Diligent flees toward Capo Frois under kill orders. How much of the Boksrock geometry Thyra pre-plans rather than exploits stays unresolved — but there is no ambiguity that Kelowan is where Dominion order unravels.
