Carolien-Amaia
Carolien-Amaia is the Now and Forever Queen of Verak who holds the rotating imperial throne of the Crown Dominion for a sixty-year term through most of the novel’s main timeline. From the Imperial Palace at Kelowan she manages fleet exercises, helium-economy stakes, and human unrest — until hardline manipulation, the Dolod crisis, and palace sabotage destroy her reign while Helena-Thyra rises.
Empress of a rotating Dominion
The Crown Dominion’s Imperial Accord cycles the empress role among the queens of its royal houses. Carolien’s coronation comes when Luus-Kinza hands over the throne for the next sixty years — decades before the Diligent endgame. As empress she is the public face of Dominion order at Kelowan: orbital infrastructure, the helium-rich HeSea, and the long strategic problem of iron-exotic gas giant Dolod approaching the capital system.
Fellow queens — including Helena-Chione of Wynid (later Helena-Thyra), Ramona-Ursule, Inessa-Pierina, and Luus of Bassa (styled Luus-Kinza as empress) — keep their own agendas. Carolien’s court is therefore less absolute monarchy than multi-house coalition under time-limited primacy.
Gondiar crackdown and hardline capture
After archon Makaio-Faraji is murdered on Gondiar (by human-linked operators in the Toše / Gyvoy network), infiltrated hardliner Uulana-Shoigu meets Carolien about the killing. Carolien already suspects Thyra will demand command of the Capo Frois annexation fleet as a political concession. Shoigu steers her toward clamping down on human insurrection; she dispatches hardline General Avone-Valerio and a navy fleet that locks Gondiar’s transit and comms, installs ghost units and awakened animals, and displaces the Jalgori-Tobu household for navy HQ.
That crackdown — framed as imperial responsibility — feeds the very rebellion it claims to suppress. Josias Aponi delivers his strike broadcast, airstrikes kill the Marchioness, and the Diligent faction radicalizes. Carolien becomes the empress who authorizes the iron fist while rivals use the resulting chaos for succession theatre.
Fleet exercises, Boksrock, and fall
Years of planning mass queens’ fleets at Kelowan (sold as readiness for Mara Yama conflict) put Carolien at the centre of a capital-system concentration of force just as Finn’s Archimedes Engine operation on Dolod redirects momentum toward Boksrock. When Boksrock’s trajectory is calculated as a threat to Kelowan, Carolien rages and begins to suspect Thyra — correctly reading that the hardline Wynid queen benefits from imperial humiliation.
She attempts evacuation. The Green Bounty has already released Uixic-made kestrel sprites above the Imperial Palace; they infect her ship’s systems. The vessel fails and enters free fall. Distant, Helena-Thyra watches the explosion and rejoices, eager for post-crisis realignment, Carolien’s arc is thus the institutional empress destroyed between manipulated hardline policy she half-owned and a capital endgame she never fully controlled.
