Gondiar
Gondiar is the primary human-client world of the novel’s Uranic thread: home of the Jalgori-Tobu family, the city of Santa Rosa, and the detective arc of Terence Wilson-Fletcher. Under Celestial overlordship, Gondiar’s ministerial politics, Hafnir settlement deal, and later navy crackdowns turn a provincial society into a pressure cooker for rebellion and repression.
Client rule and the Jalgori-Tobus
Gondiar is administered for the Crown by Uranic aristocrats who hold land titles and ministerial offices while ultimate authority remains Celestial. Its farm estates sit in Wynid’s economic sphere under the Crown’s carve-up of Kelowan-system assets, which is why a coup on that seat reaches all the way down to this planet. The Marchioness Mary Kathleen Jalgori-Tobu heads a family that includes heir Zelinda, twins Finn (Minsterialis of Hafnir) and Otylia (Minsterialis of Serki), and brother Everett. Finn’s restlessness against proxy government is the personal face of a broader Uranic bind: privilege without sovereignty.
After Anoosha, the family accepts Josias Aponi’s Hafnir settlement as economically useful — absorbing Diligent colonists into the local human economy. Josias later becomes president of the Regal Democrats and gains a seat on the Human Affairs Advisory Council to the Governor, formalizing liberation politics inside the client system until hardline policy destroys that compromise.
Santa Rosa and Terence’s investigations
Santa Rosa is the urban investigative spine of the Gondiar plot. Detective Terence builds informant networks against gangs and offworld contacts (Younes, Dagon, Gyvoy Enfoe), only to find cases shut down by Governor’s office orders and Celestial-grade cover-ups. He escorts Finn, Josias, and Ellie to Zetian Palace; survives loyalty tests including a journey to Wynid; marries forensic tech Jimena; and eventually carries the Makaio-Spirit after archon Makaio-Faraji is assassinated.
Bombings, Medusa/Toše/Liliana threads, and funding trails for Human Liberation / Regal Democrats paint Santa Rosa as a node in multi-system infiltration — not a backwater crime beat. When navy occupation hardens, colleagues die and displaced Jalgori-Tobus shelter at Terence’s villa, collapsing the boundary between police work and civil war.
Crackdowns and the strike crisis
Under Helena-Thyra’s hardline era, human unrest on Gondiar is used as pretext for navy lockdowns that feed the rebellion they claim to suppress. Josias, in hiding, issues a mass broadcast urging a general strike framed as constitutional speech. Arrest warrants fall on the Jalgori-Tobus; ghost units are destroyed; retaliatory airstrikes kill the Marchioness and Everett’s wife Variaka as the family flees.
Those deaths radicalize Finn’s Engine endgame and shatter the client-family bargain that had kept Gondiar governable. By the late novel Gondiar is not a stable breadbasket of Dominion human policy but a wound: occupation, flight, and the knowledge that Celestial politics can burn a world to rewrite a narrative.
