Eleanor Aponi

Eleanor (Ellie) Faith Aponi is a skilled ~23-year-old lieutenant from the late arkship Diligent and granddaughter of owner-orator Josias Aponi. She helps rescue Finn Jalgori-Tobu on Anoosha, becomes his closest operational partner across relativistic campaigns, and later uncovers Gyvoy Enfoe’s memory wipe of her — the beat that exposes Celestial-grade manipulation behind the Engine plot.

Background

Ellie arrives in the Centauri Cluster with the Diligent, a baseline-human arkship generation far removed from the evolved Celestials who already rule the region. Where Finn is born under client-rule and treats Earth as a footnote, Ellie still carries living exodus-ship culture — land hunger, ship loyalty, and shock at finding post-human overlords instead of open worlds. Compared with privileged Uranic families on Gondiar, Diligent humans are newcomers negotiating settlement under Dominion law.

She serves as Josias’s practical counterweight: less theatrical than his politics, more focused on mission execution under captain Dejean. She partners Finn from the novel’s opening set-piece onward and is the human-scale centre of the long ZPZ-to-Engine campaign, which runs through Terrik Papuan, Kajval with Elsbeth McQuillan, Kingsnest, and Dolod.

Rescue of Finn and alliance

After a spaceplane crash on Anoosha, Ellie and Josias find Finn in the Camurdy wilderness — dumped and injured after a failed mercenary heist. The rescue seeds the Hafnir land deal that settles many Diligent colonists on Gondiar and binds Finn’s fortunes to the arkship. Ellie accompanies Finn on the long campaigns that follow: reclaiming the Diligent, the ZPZ salvage at Terrik Papuan (under fire from Traveler assets linked to Andino), the Kajval dropship extraction with Elsbeth McQuillan, and the Kingsnest run for Archimedes Engine software.

Across relativistic years of ship-time and decades of world-time, Ellie and Finn’s partnership remains a human-scale anchor inside Hamilton’s multi-thread politics. On Gondiar, family ties thicken as Josias marries Finn’s twin Otylia, tying Ellie into the Jalgori-Tobu household by marriage network as well as friendship.

Memory, rekaul, and Gyvoy

During the Dolod endgame, Ellie discovers a gap in her recent memories and takes rekaul — the neural drug drawn from penned Moaksha — to recover them. She remembers Gyvoy Enfoe forcibly interfacing with Finn’s induction pad and then wiping her recollection of the act. The recovered sequence convinces her that Gyvoy is operating at Celestial competence — not merely a Traveler middleman — and she warns Finn after he returns from the Engine stations. That revelation reframes the Boksrock / momentum-transfer crisis as a product of infiltration as much as of Uranic agency.
