Entropy drive

An entropy drive is a class of ship propulsion technology in the Centauri Cluster setting of Exodus: The Archimedes Engine. Alongside ZPZ generators and other high-end plant, entropy drives mark who can move hulls at interstellar scale — and what can be sold, withheld, or demonstrated as a bargaining chip among Travelers, Dominion clients, and deniable operators.

Ship drives in the Cluster

Cluster civilization assumes mature starflight: freighters, navies, Traveler free agents, and late arkships all depend on drive stacks that baseline Sol-era colonists would treat as miracles. Entropy drives sit in that stack as recognized propulsion hardware — named in faction and salvage contexts as a technology stake rather than a single unique MacGuffin.

Entropy drives get far less scene-by-scene attention than ZPZ acquisition or Archimedes Engine commands. They stay part of the general interstellar drive ecosystem: recognized, tradeable propulsion hardware rather than a mechanism the novel takes apart.

Bargaining chip and Traveler stakes

Traveler contracts list entropy drives with ZPZ generators and antimatter demos as tech that moves negotiations. Mobility is leverage: a ship that can leave a system on its own terms can ferry fugitives (Josias on Andino’s disguised hull), shadow salvage, or threaten post-climax demonstrations near Capo Frois. Withholding drive components, sabotage of a power plant, or offers of upgraded propulsion all function as diplomacy by logistics.

For the Diligent, the mid-game priority is explicitly ZPZ-class plant so a late ark can act as a deep-space vessel — and the arkship’s own entropy drives are what it pays with. Gyvoy Enfoe brokers the swap: the drive stock Dejean keeps running is traded for a path to the Terrik Papuan ZPZ generator. Entropy drives are therefore not background economy here but the price of the novel’s central piece of technology.

Relation to ZPZ and Engine physics

ZPZ generators are framed as advanced drive/power that elevates a hull’s expected weight class; Archimedes Engines operate at planetary momentum scales. Entropy drives occupy the ordinary (for the Cluster) ship layer between those extremes: how vessels transit, chase, and escape without Engine stations. Closing beats that mix anchor-ship geometry, ZPZ fields, and fleet kill orders still presuppose that every side’s hulls have some working drive stack — entropy-class or better.
