Marcellu
Marcellu is the Traveler middleman who carries archon Sahdiah’s brief against the Diligent — he is to hire ships, track the arkship, disable its ZPZ generator, and keep a destabilizing technology out of Cluster politics. He never completes it. Liliana kills him with a cherenkov blade at Pana-Seak, and his death converts a straightforward interdiction job into the murder investigation that eventually links Traveler crime to the Dolod catastrophe.
Sahdiah’s ZPZ brief
Sahdiah, archon of the nomad trader dominion Talloch-Te, treats a human arkship with a ZPZ generator as a “random factor” — an unpredictable input into a Great Game the Celestial dominions prefer to play among themselves. Rather than move openly, he tasks Marcellu, who flies to meet him with Andino aboard the Arcadia’s Moon. This is how Talloch-Te power works throughout the novel: archon errands and Traveler logistics instead of fleet actions, with a human-scale fixer holding the deniable end.
Marcellu’s crews contest the salvage directly. When Gyvoy Enfoe’s trade sends Finn, Ellie, and Toše to Terrik Papuan for the generator, it is Andino and Marcellu’s side putting them under attack — ship-to-ship fire that helps turn a procurement run into a multi-year expedition. The interdiction fails; the Diligent gets its ZPZ.
Pana-Seak and the cherenkov blade
At Pana-Seak orbital city above Anoosha, Marcellu plans the next move — tracking the Diligent and disabling the generator — hiring Andino and meeting Liliana. She kills him there with a cherenkov blade. The murder removes the Traveler middleman from the board at the moment his brief is closest to mattering, and it is never explained to the people it most affects: Sahdiah suspects Olomo and the Heresy Dominion of ordering it, which is wrong, and the wrong suspicion shapes archon behaviour for the rest of the book.
What the murder sets in motion
Marcellu matters more dead than alive. Sahdiah summons Medusa, Marcellu’s right hand, aboard the Arcadia’s Moon and tasks her with finding the killer — sending an assassin into Gondiar’s gang networks, where she contracts abductions, is arrested by Terence Wilson-Fletcher, and trades what she knows. The detail she passes is the one that breaks the case open: the killer used a cherenkov blade and was a female associate of Marcellu’s.
That description is what lets Terence match Liliana’s face at the old Gyvoy Enfoe symposium against the Cybele’s Eagle escapee, and the chain runs on from there — Medusa to Sahdiah, Sahdiah to Dolod, the archon board to the Gyvoy imposture warning. A fixer killed in a corridor over a technology trade is the first link in the sequence that ends with archons burning for a gas giant.
